We brought together social service providers, apartment owners, authorities, politicians, companies, and the public in Ústí nad Labem to support families and individuals at risk of losing their homes. The goal was to create a functional system that would provide them with support in creating a safe home. As part of the project, we helped 16 vulnerable households keep their homes or find new safe homes. We suspended the project in August 2024.
Why is this necessary?
Up to 1,000 homeless families and individuals live in Ústí nad Labem. From long-term experience, we know that solving this problem at the local level requires coordinated cooperation between all actors who can influence the situation, including the general public. Ústí has great potential for such cooperation.
However, the situation of vulnerable households is also greatly influenced by national solutions. The benefit system is proving to be very problematic: it is unable to respond flexibly to specific situations. Efforts to find a long-term solution must therefore be supplemented by rapid direct financial assistance to households at risk of losing their homes.

What we did
We supported a community of people who care about the fate of Ústí and want to contribute to change. We collaborated not only with local organizations working in the social sphere, but also with people from the cultural sphere. We organized thematic cultural events in Ústí, as well as debates with local residents.
We met with local politicians and civil servants and listened to their needs. Together, we sought solutions that could improve the housing crisis in Ústí nad Labem. For example, we helped create the city’s first strategic document dedicated to housing policy.
We established the Daruj domov (Give a Home) fund, which gives the public the opportunity to help vulnerable families in Ústí nad Labem. Financial donations from the fund have helped specific households cover necessary housing-related expenses that are not covered by state assistance. We suspended the fund’s activities in August 2024 due to capacity reasons.
I am sending the money I received from the Ústí nad Labem City Council in a successful lawsuit to abolish the no-benefit zone, and I thank you for helping to solve one of the most pressing problems in our city.
